In the article "Building a Better Teacher" by Elizabeth Green, there are a lot of interesting facts and opinions that i witness myself everyday. There is no right or wrong way to teach, and nobody tells you how to be a teacher but there is a way to better your skills. Due to poor performances by the teachers, they lose their students. A teacher has a roll of a commitment to encourage students to learn, and many teachers fail. Schools need to develop a better communication between them and their teachers. It's found odd that teachers working in the same building, teaching the same grades have different outcomes.
It is a belief that being good at teaching, is a kind of magic that individuals either have or don't have. Though we have highly trained teachers, students score results are low, and administrators fear the state closing down schools. Joel Klein, New York City schools chancellor gave a talk in Manhattan about "Creating a New Teaching Profession" which politically was called "deselection." That belief was to improve the quality of teaching, by firing the bad teachers and hiring "better" ones. Klein thinks that if the personnel isn't changed, all that changes are the chairs.
Forty-two year old Doug Lemov, realized he had a problem after a successful career as a teacher, principal and charter-school founder. He was hired by schools, troubled & desperate to better their teaching skills. He wanted to reach something deep, didnt want to see the good people failing. Teachers change their ways of teaching to test students behaviors and class control. He was told, to stand still while he taught, so he didnt destract his students, and he saw a behavior change.
Personally, I agree with all of these studies, there's no right or wrong way to teach, but its how dedicated and willing you are to try different teaching techniques for children to understand better. The more the students are comfortable, the more willing they are to learn, and apply their knowledge to score better test grades. Making little changes in the classrooms, can result in HUGE change.

ReplyDeleteThis is a start, but it needs work, I think. Remember at the beginning and throughout the summary focus on what Green has to say about the issue (not what you have observed--your observations fit into the response half of the essay). What exactly is Green's main point about teachers? When you say in para. 2 that it is a belief..., do you mean that Green believes this? What is Green's view of this idea that good teachers are born not made, and that schools should then fire the bad ones?
Lemov is an important figure here, but you don't really explain to clearly what he offers in terms of reforming teaching. Can you be more specific about the "ways of teaching" that he suggests teachers adopt? How has he come up with these suggestions?
In addition to Lemov's ideas, who are the other educators that Green talks about and what different solutions do they offer?
In your last para. you seem to return to response, rather than summary. (Again, you can write more about how and why you agree with Green, Lemov, or whoever in your full text-wrestling essay.)
I'm glad to see you got this much done! Keep workng!
I too read this article and find your comments about teachers most interesting. However just go back and add some illustrations from Green with quotes of course, add the experiments Lemov was involved and Ball's observations with her third grade class. You are well on your way.
